Sailor Mercury

my Sailor Mercury.

to be perfectly honest, Sailor Mercury was never really one of my favorite senshi. she was too serious for me, and i couldn’t relate to her being the best at academics and knowing exactly what she wanted to be when she grows up (a doctor, like her mom). but after growing up a little, i can appreciate a lot of aspects about Ami. i like how determined and goal-driven she is. and i really like that her father is a traveling artist who sends her some of his work. so while she’s planted firmly in the cerebral world of academia and dreams of being a doctor with her mom, this communication with her dad hints at her appreciation for recreational and less goal-oriented pursuits, like her hobby of swimming.

i really love Mercury’s personality most of all. she’s by far the most mature of the senshi, and while at times she has a personal crisis or two, she seems to really have herself together. but rather than being snobby about it (as other students accuse her of when Usagi first meets her) Ami is incredibly sweet, kind, and modest. although she often comes off as serious and no-nonsense, Ami always has time for her friends when they really need her. her main downfall might be that as a shy and slightly withdrawn person she’s likely to keep everything to herself instead of letting her friends be there for her as well.

in my design of Sailor Mercury, i picture her being the senshi with the least physical presence, being very small and petite. i also gave her a bit of an updated, modern short haircut. i like her original hair (and especially think it’s cool how it gets longer over the course of the series), but just felt like playing around with it.

because she is less outspoken and more of the calm voice of reason behind the sailor senshi, she can seem like she’s not as much of a presence as the others, but her different strategies are actually a great asset. especially in the beginning, Mercury is more of the team defense and strategist, compared to the other senshi’s offensive attacks. she’s the only senshi with her own holographic visor and a cute little computer (which looks awesomely like a DS), that somehow give her valuable information about the enemies they’re facing, on top of her first few attacks which are essentially smoke screens for evading or confusing opponents. Ami is so effective as a senshi that when Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars and Luna are still looking for the leader of the senshi, Luna is pretty sure it must be Mercury.

i also think it’s adorable that Ami and Luna seem to have a special affection for each other, and Luna can often be seen tagging along with Ami when Usagi isn’t around.
